Holy Spirit Devotional 5: The Spirit of your Father

Matthew 10:19-20 – When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Jesus sent out his disciples to proclaim God’s kingdom is at hand and to demonstrate it by healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing lepers, and casting out demons. The demonstration shows the power of life over death and of freedom over bondage. For the message they proclaimed and its demonstration, persecution would come and result in the message being proclaimed even to leaders of nations. This happened to the disciples after Jesus’ resurrection and the giving of the Holy Spirit. This continued through disciples of future generations and continues today.

Jesus wants us to know that we do not need to proclaim the message of God’s kingdom in our own strength. The Spirit of our Father will give us what to speak. This was also true for Jesus as he fellowshipped with the Spirit (John 14:10, 24). The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of our Father. The Spirit that dwells in those who follow Jesus is the Father’s Spirit (cf. John 4:24). He is your Father and my Father and the Father of all who abide in Jesus. We are His children and He never leaves nor forsakes us. Even in death, He will rasie us up with Jesus.

Holy Spirit, You are the Spirit of my Father. Thank you for calling out Abba, Father in me and testifying to my spirit that I am God’s child (Galatians 4:6; Romans 8:16). I can fellowship with You and proclaim God’s kingdom. When resisted, you will give me what to say and demonstrate the power of my Father’s kingdom.
