John 14:16-17 – And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus asks the Father in heaven, the Maker of heaven and earth, to give us the Spirit of truth. He desires to reveal Himself to us and make a home in us, and this happens by the Spirit of truth coming to us (John 14:16, 20, 23). This tells us a lot about truth from God’s perspective.
The opposite of this truth is that our Maker does not want to reveal Himself to us so we can know Him. The lie says He wants us to be orphans with no place to call a lasting home (John 14:18). This opposing of the truth entered at the beginning of creation.
Man knew His Maker and had a beautiful home to steward. The father of lies offered a different way of seeing things that seemed wise and pleasant, yet separated man from the truth and thus from true life (Genesis 3:1-6).
Jesus, as the truth, came to restore this true life (John 1:4, 14). We are given the Spirit of truth to stay in this truth. Having the Spirit of truth, in fellowship with Him, we can discern lies that come to assault our identity as children of God who have a lasting home within us right now, along with an eternal home in heaven (John 14:2, 16).
Thank you, heavenly Father, for the gift of the Spirit of truth going out from you into me so I can live in the truth, so I can abide in Jesus. Teach me how to depend on and engage with the Spirit of truth.
